Carolyn Lloyd-Cohen LLC

Retirement Plans

Whatever the size of your business—whether you employ just one person or hundreds— Preferred Pensions LLC can match your specific objectives with a pension plan that works for you. A qualified plan, ranging from defined benefit to profit sharing to
401(k), is a major benefit for every employee, while providing the business owner with tax advantages and the ability to attract and retain high-quality workers. And with creative plan design, benefits can be enhanced for you and your key employees.

Preferred Pensions LLC was founded by Carolyn Lloyd-Cohen to provide qualified plan design, administration services and investment management for a wide range of pension plans. Our professionals work directly with you to help customize a qualified retirement plan in accordance with your specific objectives, design tax-advantaged financial strategies, and minimize fiduciary liability. Establishing well-designed plans which allow business owners and key employees to maximize their contributions is consistent with our commitment to encourage business owners to diversify their assets among different “buckets” of money.

Our services begin with an in-depth Discovery Process designed to identify and prioritize both short and long-term objectives, uncover obstacles that could block your progress, and pinpoint issues of greatest concern regarding qualified plan design. Our professionals will meet with you and your business partners to determine if everyone is on the same page. If not, we will help you find middle ground. Fact-finding discussions will bring greater clarity to your current situation, your future aspirations and your readiness to achieve them. We will help you make wise choices and ensure that all decisions and strategies are consistent with your goals and values.

Plan Design

The actuarial team at Preferred Pensions LLC assists in providing qualified plan design for a variety of pension plans, including defined benefit, cash balance, profit sharing and 401(k), consistent with plan sponsor objectives. Utilizing our creative plan design capabilities, we can often provide greater enhancements to key individuals.

Third Party Administration

Preferred Pensions LLC is a full-service third party administration firm. We provide a broad range of administrative services that ensure legislative compliance with IRS and Department of Labor requirements, including document preparation and tax filings. We also keep abreast of any legislation changes that may affect your plan.

Investment Management for Pension and Profit Sharing Plans

Appropriate risk management is critical when investments are being made on behalf of plan participants. Traditional Defined Benefit and Cash Balance plans may need to consider different investment criteria than pooled Profit Sharing accounts. Because we understand these distinctions, we will help you choose investment managers who offer the most fitting asset allocation for your plan.

Investment Solutions for 401(k) Plans

Whether your plan is newly established or a takeover for us, our investment advisory team can help you choose the appropriate investment vehicle for your plan. We begin our independent, unbiased request for proposal process by contacting highly regarded record keepers with investment products, fund choices and fee structures that best suit you and your participants. Our robust fund scoring system will help you provide appropriate offerings to your participants, supporting them in reaching their retirement goals as well as help minimizing your fiduciary liability.

Fiduciary Due Diligence

Many plan sponsors are unaware of their fiduciary responsibilities, and that can lead to some very unpleasant surprises. At Preferred Pensions LLC, our professionals provide documented compliance with ERISA 404(a) and 404(c), assisting plan sponsors in identifying and minimizing their fiduciary liability. We provide customized investment policy statements to establish firm guidelines for decision-making, clearly defining investment objectives, selection criteria, procedures and underlying philosophy. And through our robust 401(k) fund scoring system, we also help in selecting, monitoring and evaluating the plan’s investment options.

Our disciplined process of monitoring investment performance, relative to specified guidelines, is consistently applied. It includes regularly scheduled and documented investment policy committee meetings, and a reliable system for replacing poorly performing funds. Funds are evaluated on ten criteria, including investment performance in a variety of market conditions, risk-adjusted returns, reasonable and competitive fees, and qualitative characteristics, such as acceptable manager tenure.
